  • The recipe was first documented in 1862, in a book called the Bartenders Guide, by Jerry Thomas. However, it is known that this basic recipe existed a century prior.


  • This cocktail is so prevalent in the United States that it now has its festive day; National Whiskey Sour day is celebrated on August 25.


  • While this recipe is still the best-known rendition, recognized by the IBA, other versions of the drink have since become classics in their own way, from the red wine-topped New York Sour to the foamy Boston Sour in which egg white is required.
